Actually, I never intended to have a business partner. My plan was to open my own company on my own.
However, the universe (also known as “Twitter”) placed David Sher in my path, and my plans changed completely and irrevocably from that point forward.
David is the greatest business partner I could have. But it’s NOT because of these things:
It’s NOT because he’s incredibly well-connected:
- David currently serves on the board of directors for Birmingham Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, Operation New Birmingham, City Action Partnership (CAP).
- Past Chairman of Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce (2005), Operation New Birmingham (ONB), City Action Partnership (CAP), YMCA Downtown, and International Association of Commercial Collectors (IACC)
- Has been co-owner of AmSher Receivables Management for 40 years.
It’s NOT because his 40+ years’ business experience has taught me so much about how to treat people
- Daily he teaches me lessons from his experiences in the collections business, like “set people’s expectations up front on how you want to be paid, and you’ve done 95% of the work”
- His philosophy when calling on prospects “your prospect should do 95% of the talking in a first-time meeting”
- His tried-and-true lessons on customer service “you should get back to people as soon as possible, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because no one actually DOES this, so you stand out more when you do”.
It’s NOT because he is a role model for how the perfect businessman should behave:
- He consistently keeps up with people in his network, going out of his way to congratulate folks on their achievements and those of their family, as well (and he did this LONG before Facebook made this easier!)
- He is NEVER late for a meeting – EVER. If he is running late, he calls way in advance.
- He always begins a phone call by saying “is this an ok time to talk?”, understanding the value of people’s time and that sometimes, it’s NOT an ok time to talk!
- He is liberal with his compliments and never hesitates to go out of his way to compliment someone for a job well done.
No, none of those things is the real reason why David is the perfect business partner for Buzz12. The REAL reason he is the perfect business partner is because he agreed with me that we should put “having fun” FIRST as one of our company’s core values! Having that in common is the glue that holds us together and makes us wake up every day excited to work together with each other and our great team!
